Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of arm muscle strength on smash ability among male badminton extracurricular students at SMA Negeri 5 Makassar. In badminton, the smash is considered the primary attacking technique that requires optimal coordination, explosive movement, and upper-body muscular strength to produce fast and accurate shots. However, observations conducted during extracurricular activities revealed that many students demonstrated insufficient smash sharpness and shuttlecock speed, which were suspected to be influenced by limited arm muscle strength. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the relationship between physical strength and smash performance scientifically. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population consisted of all male students participating in badminton extracurricular activities at SMA Negeri 5 Makassar. The sample included 20 students selected using the total sampling technique. Data collection instruments consisted of a 60-second push-up test to measure arm muscle strength (Variable X) and a badminton smash accuracy test to measure smash ability (Variable Y). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis through the IBM SPSS Statistics application. The results showed that the average arm muscle strength score was 11.95, while the average smash ability score reached 6.70. Hypothesis testing produced an F-value of 3.589 with a significance level of 0.019. Since the significance value was lower than 0.05 (0.019 < 0.05), the research hypothesis was accepted. It can therefore be concluded that arm muscle strength has a significant effect on smash ability among extracurricular badminton students. The findings imply that integrating functional strength training into badminton coaching programs is essential for improving students’ offensive performance and overall athletic development.
