The Role of Coaches on the Career Development of Football Athletes at Darul Amanah Football Academy U18 in Kendal

Football is a sport that requires optimal physical ability, technical proficiency, tactical understanding, and mental readiness; therefore, a systematic and well-directed training process is essential to support athlete development. In this context, coaches play a strategic role in enhancing athletes’ potential, shaping character, and strengthening psychological readiness to support long-term career development. This study aimed to examine the influence of the coach’s role on the career development of U-18 football athletes at Darul Amanah Football Academy, Kendal Regency. This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach with a correlational design, involving 30 athletes as respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on the Coach–Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q) and additional items measuring the coach’s role in athlete development. The data were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation technique with the assistance of SPSS. The results revealed a positive relationship between the coach’s role and athlete career development, with a correlation coefficient of 0.307, which falls into the low category. However, the significance value of 0.099 (p > 0.05) indicates that the relationship is not statistically significant. These findings suggest that while coaches contribute to athlete developmentparticularly in communication, motivation, training program planning, and psychological support their role is not the dominant factor influencing career development. In conclusion, athlete career development is influenced by multiple factors, including individual ability, competitive experience, and environmental conditions. Therefore, optimizing the coach’s role through comprehensive and sustainable approaches is necessary to enhance its impact on athlete development.
