Abstrak

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are essential foundations for children's motor development, physical literacy, and lifelong participation in physical activity. Among the object-control skills, throwing and catching are widely recognized as key indicators of motor competence. However, concerns remain regarding the measurement quality of throw-catch assessments, particularly in terms of validity, reliability, and their effectiveness in representing overall FMS. This study aimed to examine the quality of throw-catch test measurements as indicators of Fundamental Movement Skills by synthesizing contemporary empirical evidence and psychometric findings. A systematic literature review was conducted using articles published between 2015 and 2025 retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Google Scholar, and Crossref databases. The review included studies that evaluated throw-catch assessments or FMS instruments containing throw-catch components and reported psychometric properties such as validity, reliability, practicality, and sensitivity. A total of 32 eligible studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using a narrative synthesis approach. The findings revealed that 87.5% of studies reported satisfactory validity evidence, while 84.4% demonstrated acceptable reliability. Practicality was confirmed in 75.0% of studies, and 71.9% reported adequate sensitivity. Reliability coefficients ranged from 0.76 to 0.96 for test–retest reliability and reached 0.98 for inter-rater reliability. Furthermore, throw-catch performance showed strong correlations with overall FMS scores (r = 0.61–0.84), indicating its effectiveness in representing object-control competence and motor proficiency. The throw-catch test possesses strong psychometric properties and can be considered a valid, reliable, practical, and scientifically robust indicator of Fundamental Movement Skills in physical education, youth sport, and motor development assessment contexts.
